Course overview

Keep useful support. Return meaningful control.

About this course

A practical ethics course about recognizing when helpful behavior begins to displace the person's direction—and how to reduce power, redesign support, and repair boundaries without abandoning legitimate assistance.

Designed for recreational therapists, behavior consultants, and other direct practitioners supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in community settings. Work through concrete ethical decisions using short grouped videos, complementary reading, fictional cases, and the Support or Control? Continuum. Each course stands alone.

What you will learn

  • Identify common ways prompting, speaking, monitoring, routines, and financial help can shift from support toward control.
  • Analyze an interaction for necessity, consent, choice, power, dependence, and the ability to step back.
  • Redesign a controlling pattern into individualized, autonomy-supportive assistance with a clear boundary or fading plan.

Put the learning to work

Use the Support or Control? Continuum to make a professional decision more specific, person-centered, and reviewable. Apply the tool to a complete fictional case, compare alternatives, and identify an appropriate next step.

Free learning, optional certificate

At launch, the instructional lessons, on-page practice, knowledge check, and evaluation will be available free. The optional certificate step comes last.

Certificate purchases and automatic issuance remain unavailable while NCTRC session-content pre-approval is unverified. Completion requirements and any certificate price will be disclosed before purchase. No payment is due now.
