About the course
Community recreation is not just about getting someone into a public space. A person can be at the park, near the court, inside the community center, or beside the splash pad and still need a better fit. This course focuses on what happens once the person is there. During this course, you will examine practical ways to support inclusion in playgrounds, parks, trails, splash pads, pools, courts, gyms, libraries, hobby groups, community events, and other public recreation environments. The course emphasizes access, adaptation, autonomy, support intensity, play across the lifespan, interaction patterns, proactive and reactive facilitation, dignity, community partnerships, documentation, and follow-up. The course is designed for a mixed but therapy-forward audience, including recreational therapists, therapeutic recreation professionals, disability service providers, behavior support providers, direct support supervisors, and related therapeutic professionals. Examples are fictional and focused on practical community-based support.
